Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you require switching to "Manual Capture"? Won't that create more work for me?

Not at all. Switching to Manual Capture is the secret to saving money, and we automate the work for you.

- Without ApexGuard: If you capture payment immediately and then refund a fraudster, you lose the transaction fee (usually 2.9%).

- With ApexGuard: We check the order before the money is taken. If it's fraud, we "Void" it. You pay $0 fees.

- The Automation: You don't need to click anything. We automatically capture safe orders instantly. We only pause the risky ones.

Will this annoy my legitimate customers?

No. The vast majority (approx. 95-98%) of your customers are "Low Risk" and won't notice a thing their orders are approved instantly. Verification emails are only sent to orders flagged as "Medium" or "High" risk by Shopify (Or your rules). For a real customer, this is a quick 30-second check to secure their purchase. For a fraudster, it’s a roadblock that makes them run away.

How is this different from Shopify Flow or standard automation?

You can, but that’s a "blunt instrument" approach that costs you money and time. The Problem with Flow: It handles the easy stuff (Approve Low / Cancel High) but fails in the "Grey Area". It simply tags those orders for manual review, leaving you with the hard work of investigating, emailing, and deciding what to do.

The ApexGuard Difference: We don't just "flag" problems; we solve them. Instead of you chasing the customer, our system automatically challenges them, verifies their identity (using credit card or bank details), and makes the decision for you. Flow creates tasks; ApexGuard completes them.

How does the verification actually work? What do my customers see?

We use a dynamic "Smart Challenge" engine. Instead of generic questions, we use the specific data from the order to verify ownership. The system automatically selects the best verification method based on the payment type:

The "Cardholder Knowledge" Challenge (Standard Flow)Used for direct credit card payments to prove physical possession of the card:

The "Last 4" Check: We ask the customer to enter the last 4 digits of the card used. This is the strongest proof of ownership.
The "Awareness" Check: We ask for the transaction amount (allowing a small estimation margin). Fraudsters often buy blindly; real customers know what they spent.
The "Card Type" Check: A multiple-choice question asking to identify the card brand (e.g., Visa vs. Mastercard).

The Fallback Flow (For PayPal / Wallets) If card data is hidden (e.g., PayPal, Apple Pay), we switch to behavioral questions:
Location Check:
"Where were you located when placing the order?" Phone Validation: "What is the country code of the phone number provided?"

The "Bank Code" Verification (Ultimate Security) For Shopify Payments & Stripe users: We can ask the customer to provide a specific 4-digit code that appears on their actual bank statement next to the pending charge. This provides 100% proof of access to the bank account.

💡 Why this matters: This isn't just a quiz; it’s Compelling Evidence. If a customer answers these correctly and later files a "Not Authorized" chargeback, you can submit this digital log to the bank as proof that the user actively verified the transaction details.

What happens if a customer ignores the verification email?

You can set the rules! Most merchants choose our "Auto-Cancel" feature: If the customer doesn't verify within a set time (e.g., 72 hours), the order is automatically voided, and the inventory is released back to your store. No action required from you.

Can I decide which orders get held, besides Shopify's risk flags?

Yes, you have full control. While ApexGuard automatically handles Shopify's High/Medium risk levels, you can create Custom Manual Rules to fit your store's needs.

Example 1: Force verification for any order over $500.
Example 2: Always verify orders containing specific "High Risk" products (like electronics or gift cards).
Example 3: Auto-approve returning customers while strictly checking new ones. You decide the logic; we enforce the protection.

Does ApexGuard take a percentage of my sales?

Absolutely not. Unlike other fraud solutions that charge a % per transaction, we believe your margins belong to you. We charge a flat monthly subscription based on your order volume. Predictable and fair.

Does it work with Shopify Payments and Stripe?

Yes, it works seamlessly with Shopify Payments, Stripe, and all major gateways. Since we integrate directly with Shopify's order flow, we can protect any payment method.

Do I need coding skills to install this?

None at all. ApexGuard is a "Plug & Play" app. The setup takes about 2 minutes. You just need to enable the app embed for the blocklist to work and adjust your payment capture settings.

Can I customize the verification email?

Yes. You can fully customize the subject line, body text, and logo to match your brand's voice.

Can I block people from specific countries or bad IP addresses?

Yes. Our Blocklist feature allows you to block access to your store by Country or IP address. You can also auto-cancel orders from specific email addresses, phone numbers, or shipping locations that have caused you trouble in the past.

I have a VIP customer who always gets flagged. Can I whitelist them?

Yes. You can add their email or details to the Allowlist. ApexGuard will treat them as a VIP and auto-approve their orders instantly, ignoring any risk signals.
